Undulating Waves is a multimedia musical project that departs from a posthumanist perspective and explores the relationship between humans and marine ecosystems. The project connects bioacoustic recordings of the Adriatic Sea and its organisms with the sound of oboe, English horn, soprano and alto saxophone, and live electronics. Field recordings of the sea, birds, underwater noise and means of transport form the starting point for the composition, which, through analysis and transcription, translates them into extended sonic possibilities of the instruments.
In the 60-minute work, recordings of the Adriatic Sea and archives of the National Institute of Biology merge with live performance in a multichannel spatial sound setup. The audience is immersed in the experience of a “microorganism beneath the sea surface”, where the sonic space reveals the beauty of the marine world while also documenting civilizational destruction and environmental changes. The project pursues a dual goal: to develop an innovative synthesis of bioacoustic music, field recordings and conventional instruments with extended techniques, and at the same time to raise awareness of the consequences of human impact on the marine environment.
