The Listener at the Center of a Forking Path Network.
The Forking Path Network is a live performance system for multichannel sound projection. In this system, the output of a single sound generator, an electronic Indian tanpura, is successively split into eight separate signal lines which are processed differentially and dynamically using various combinations of analog and digital signal processors. The resulting signals relayed to separate loudspeakers surrounding the audience create a complex and disorienting two-dimensional sound field environment. The summing of the variously processed signal lines within the space created by the speaker array creates unexpected and unpredictable perceptive results that are varied and controlled in real time by the player, and also by the movement of audience members within the field.
