Any collaborative musical work requires the use of certain ground rules along with constraints related to the project. A certain amount of humility is essential to accept the challenges that arise from a new situation and the relationship with the partner. The complementarity of different aesthetics and similar tastes, as well as a shared sense of challenge, ensures that the work always seems to move forward. One must be accountable not only to oneself but also to the other.
Let us start the game.
April 90: Idea of a joint project.
May: Confirmation of the proposal. Choice of title.
June: Definition of the ground rules. Research
directions. Music articulated and based on synthesis. Few or no soundscapes or anecdotal sounds.
Rule 1: Each composer creates a five-minute sequence alone, which the partner/opponent can alter in any way, with the original author having the "final cut."
Rule 2: Provide materials to the co-author.
Rule 3: One's left channel becomes the other's right channel, and vice versa.
Rule 4: Common sequence created in the GRM studios.
Rule 5: Common sequence created in the Celia Records studio.
Golden Rule: Follow none of the previous rules.
Equipment used: Multiple tape recorders, including multitracks. Numerous MIDI devices and kilometers of MIDI code. SYTER, of course, with various sound processing instruments. Both manual and automated mixing consoles. 15 reels of 6.25mm magnetic tape, each 730 meters long (plus other multitracks). 4 DAT tapes of 60 minutes each. Half a bottle of Wild Turkey. Leader tape. Splicing tape.
Definitively a lot of fun.
