Roeland Luyten
ComposerRoeland Luyten (Leuven, Belgium, 1977) is a composer of electroacoustic music. By watching science-fiction and horror movies as a young boy, he comes for the first time in contact with electroacoustic sounds. At the age of eight, he starts to study flute at the music academy in Louvain. During high school, he learns to play the electric guitar as an autodidact and starts to experiment with effects pedals. During his study of classical flute at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, he finds his real passion in the studio for the composition of electroacoustic music with Joris De Laet. Since then Roeland composes regularly new pieces and works as a musician-composer, sound engineer and stage technician along with various theater and dance productions in Belgium and abroad.
In 2004 he was nominated at the 31st competition in Bourges for the music of the dance performance "Rust". In 2005 he received the 3rd prize for his composition "Decyclage" at the 5th competition Pierre Schaeffer. In 2012 he was nominated for the 5th competition Foundation Destellos in Argentinië for his work "Inert". "Hooks" received in 2010 a special mention at the 6th competition Métamorphoses and was a finalist at the 8th competition Città di Udine. In 2014 "Helena" received a special mention in the 8th competition Métamorphoses, was a finalist in the 10th competition Città di Udine and won first prize in the 7th competition Foundation Destellos. "Knars" won the 1st prize on the 10th competition Métamorphoses.
Helena, 2014, 8’ 45’’
The intention of this piece is to create a quantum planetary universe of splintered sounds. This can easily result in just chaotic randomness. Therefore, I clot separate short sound clips into groups. In turn, those new groups clot into bigger clusters. This way I gain massive individual sound objects with high granular density. Polyrhythmical structures are enclosed by repeating short granular patterns, like frozen mechanisms. These loops connect the bigger sound objects in time. Some things are too big to control, others too small. In between I compose.
"Helena" received a special mention on the competition "Métamorphoses 2014" (Brussels), was a finalist on the competition "Città di Udine - TEM 2014" (Italy) and won first prize on the 7th International Competition of Electroacoustic Music Composition, Category Acousmatic, of The Foundation Destellos (Argentina) in 2014.
